Aux États-Unis oui, et bien qu’il soit censé réinvestir l’argent récolté dans l’acquisition d’autres œuvres, cette pratique semble contradictoire avec la première mission d’une institution muséale : la conservation. En 2007, le Randolph College de Lynchburg (en Virginie), qui a réuni depuis 1907 une collection permanente d’œuvres d’art essentiellement américaines conservées au Maier Museum of Art, a décidé de céder quatre toiles, de George Bellows (1882-1925), Homme sur les docks, d’Edward Hicks…
