17/10/09 – Acquisition – Canberra, National Portrait Gallery – Né à Turin d’une famille d’origine française protestante, John Francis Rigaud fit l’essentiel de sa carrière en Angleterre où il arriva en 1771 à l’âge de 29 ans. Peintre de portraits et d’histoire, également peintre de décors, il devint membre de la Royal Academy en 1784 ; le tableau qu’il y présenta, Samson se libérant de ses chaînes, rappelle fortement l’art de Benjamin West.

La National Portrait Gallery de Canberra, vient d’acquérir de cet artiste un double portrait représentant…
