Un autoportrait de Gros offert au Metropolitan Museum

3/5/20 - Acquisition - New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art - C’est une petite huile, d’une grande vivacité, qui fit sensation lors de sa redécouverte en 1986 et qui était conservée depuis dans une collection particulière : cet autoportrait (ill. 1) d’Antoine Jean Gros va rejoindre les collections du Metropolitan Museum of Art de New York où il pourra être confronté idéalement avec le portrait de son ami François Gérard (ill. 2) que l’artiste réalisa probablement au même moment, en 1790.
