A painting by Raden Saleh returns to the Louvre
17/9/23 - Return from long-term loan - Paris, Musée du Louvre - We have just learned from France Info (see here) that a painting long-term loaned by the Louvre to Saint-Amand-Montrond is to be restored and returned to Paris for good. It is a rare canvas - the only one we know of in French collections - by Raden Saleh, an Indonesian pupil of the painter Horace Vernet. It was exhibited at the Salon of 1847, where it was acquired by King Louis-Philippe, with the following commentary: "A rabatteur mounted on a buffalo is attacked by a tiger".
